Week 2 - Downtown Hartford with Bonnie

My visit to Hartford CT

This week I had to travel to Hartford CT on two different days, for two different reasons.

The first was work related, to attend a conference at UCONN's Hartford Campus; and the second was for pleasure, to visit replicas of the Nina and the Pinta, who are docked at Hartford's riverfront area.

While these locations might not be considered technically downtown - they are both located within the beautiful city of Hartford CT.

In closing, this week was eye-opening for me, as it's apparent that I don't have a creative bone in my body - and Photoshop isn't coming easy for me.

But I'm looking forward to Professor Nevin's critiques and to what the rest of my classmates post this week. I can already see that THEY are VERY creative!!

Week 2 assignment: Downtown

Hello everyone,
For this week I decided to go to downtown West Haven which is my hometown. I went to the green and began to take photos of objects that I thought would be interesting for this assignment. I also went to a playground with my children and tried to be creative with the photos I took. I am new to this so hopefully I accomplished what the assignment was meant to be with these photos. Taking these photos was challenging, however, I enjoyed the process in creating the different types of images.

week 2

Hello everyone,

I was out and about taking pictures in my neighborhood as well as around my office. I was trying to capture interesting viewpoints while maintaining contrast and a unique composition. With the lack of sunlight lately I found this a bit difficult. Utilizing some editing I was able to up some contrast and highlights that I feel elevate some of these pictures. I also added a picture I took from within my office as I feel the composition was fun and interesting. Hope these look ok...

Next Week... First Shooting Assignment

Please read through the section of the Syllabus....

"Week 2

Introduction to Composition

We will learn to use line, mass, value (tone), contrast, color, and selection consciously in the creation of your images.

A big part of the photographer's art lies in one's ability to organize the visual chaos of the visible world. You learn to clarify, simplify and present your environment with intention and control. Here, we will learn to go way beyond "taking pictures", accepting whatever "comes out of the camera", and move to "making photographs" through your careful looking at your subject before shooting.
Reflect on the concept of selection and looking at the edge of the frame to consciously decide what to include and not include in your image. Appreciate light and form and how that is central to your work for this class."

Watch the Video on my critique of student work on this

Then.. Assignment: Downtown

Photograph shapes, reflections, light and pattern in an urban or town environment paying particular attention to the shapes you select in the frame and the quality of light on the subject.
Avoid being far away or showing a whole building. Always shoot with natural light. Never use flash in this class... get in close, fill the frame.

The biggest tip I can offer is to not include the sky in you composition... 99% of the time it is distracting and takes away from your composition.  Have fun.  Post your best 6-10 images.  (To get 6-10, shoot 10 times that amount). Use Photoshop to edit your work for light, contrast, color balance, etc. (watch my videos on how to do that). All Work is due Monday, June 12 at 9 am.
